I'm such a hoarder when it comes to makeup. I literally have enough makeup to possibly last me a lifetime, but unfortunately they won’t :( They expire, they all do! Well, maybe except for some powders (eye shadow, blush, face, etc) they last a bit longer if you are cautious with application & sanitize your tools prior to using. Incase you didn’t know everything has a shelf life. Once you open that tube of lipstick & apply it on your lips or swatch it on your hand, its shelf life begins. Most creams, gels and liquid products tend to change consistency once exposed to air, skin & applicators. Bacteria from these types of exposure lessens its shelf life. What is the shelf life of my products? Most cosmetic company’s will label their products with an approximate minimum shelf life date. If you take a look at the labels on your cosmetic products you will find a tiny image that looks like a jar w/ an open lid. The number in that image indicates the products shelf life. Here are some examples: The M stands for Months. I personally never paid attention to these images until I worked in cosmetics. It kills me inside that nothing lasts forever & all good things must come to an end. Like, does my favorite mascara really have to be thrown out after 3 months?!? Yes, beautés, your mascara should be replaced every 3 months (even though shelf life is usually 6M) WHY!? because our eyelashes’ main purpose is to protect our eye from debris/bacteria. And all that bacteria that don’t get “in” our eye are usually lingering on our lashes. When you coat your lashes with mascara bacteria is being transferred onto your product. If you think about its kind of gross, but unfortunately bacteria is everywhere. To avoid further contamination, just replace your products (mascaras, lipstick, lipgloss, etc) often. If you can’t find a shelf life label on your product, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t expire. The FDA under the US law does not require cosmetic manufacturers to label products with an expiration date. Below is a list of approximate expiration dates for your cosmetic products:
• Foundation 12-24M • Concealer 12-18M • Powder 24M • Eye shadow 12-24M • Mascara 3-6M • Gel Liners 6M • Lipsticks 12-24M • Lipgloss 12-24M Of course these are just approximate dates but use your best judgement when keeping your products around. If your lipstick smells funky, toss it. If your gel liner is dried up, toss it. If your liquid foundation is separating, toss it. Don’t try to salvage them. If you are a MAC cosmetics user (like me) you can simply recycle them. (I will write up another post on recycling) Also, unopened makeup should be kept in a dry cool place. The bathroom (where it can get hot & steamy) should not be a storage place for your cosmetic products. If you plan to keep your liquids & cream products for longer, store them (in a closed container) in your refrigerator to help prolong the shelf life. Now go take a look at your vanity & toss them “oldies but goodies” mascara & lipstick tubes you’ve been hoarding.
